Acetyleen C₂H₂ - B50
An Acetylene C₂H₂ - B50 gas cylinder is a specific 50-liter (water capacity) industrial gas cylinder filled with dissolved acetylene gas, primarily used for large-scale, continuous, and intensive industrial applications such as heavy flame cutting, flame straightening, and thermal spraying. Because pure acetylene is extremely unstable under pressure, the B50 cylinder is fully filled internally with a porous mass (monolith) and a solvent (usually acetone). In this state, the gas is safely dissolved.
- Heavy and continuous flame cutting (Oxy-fuel cutting):
- Application: Mechanical or manual cutting of very thick steel plates, scrap processing, and demolition of heavy steel structures.
- Why the B50? Large cutting torches consume enormous amounts of gas per minute. The B50 provides sufficient volume without the cylinder internally "boiling," which would cause acetone to be drawn out with the gas.
- Large-scale flame straightening and heating:
- Application: Extremely localized heating of heavy steel beams (such as H-profiles), ship plates, or truck chassis to remove deformations (flame straightening). Also used for preheating thick metal parts before electric welding.
- Why the B50? To thoroughly heat thick steel quickly, a massive burner head is required. Only a B50 cylinder (or a manifolded battery of cylinders) can deliver the required liters of gas per hour.
- Industrial thermal spraying (Powder spraying):
- Application: Continuous application of high-quality, wear-resistant metal or ceramic layers onto machine parts and shafts in overhaul workshops.
- Why the B50? These processes often run for hours at a time. The large gas supply of approximately 8 to 10 kg ensures the process does not have to be interrupted to change cylinders.
- Central gas supply (Manifold systems):
- Application: Multiple B50 cylinders are often coupled together in a permanent cylinder storage area (a distribution station) outside the workshop. The gas is then routed via fixed steel pipelines to various welding and cutting stations in the factory.

Transport
Strict transport rules specific to the B50
- Transport exclusively vertical (upright):
- Laying a B50 acetylene cylinder flat during transport is extremely dangerous. Due to the large volume, the porous mass can shift, or liquid acetone can flow into the valve. Always transport the cylinder upright, preferably in a specially designed cylinder pallet, bundle, or trolley, firmly anchored to the vehicle with heavy-duty tension straps.
- Steel protective cap is mandatory:
- Due to the enormous weight of approximately 85 kg, the impact of a fall is massive. The steel protective cap must always be fully screwed onto the cylinder to prevent the valve from breaking off. A broken valve turns the cylinder into a rocket.
- Ventilated transport (Open loading bed highly recommended):
- Preferably never transport a B50 in a closed passenger car. Use an open pickup, an open trailer, or a van with certified mechanical roof and floor ventilation. If a micro-leak occurs, the large amount of gas in a B50 creates an explosive atmosphere in a closed, unventilated space within minutes.
- Fire extinguisher mandatory:
- For professional transport (even under the 1000-point exemption), a certified 2 kg powder fire extinguisher (ABC) must always be immediately accessible to the driver.
- Loading and unloading:
- Given the weight of nearly 90 kg, a B50 cylinder must not be lifted manually. Use a tail lift, forklift, or a specially certified lifting clamp. Never let the cylinder fall or roll off the loading bed.
