Acetyleen C₂H₂ - B20
An Acetylene C₂H₂ - B20 gas cylinder is a specific 20-liter (water capacity) industrial gas cylinder filled with dissolved acetylene gas, primarily used for intensive oxy-fuel welding, brazing, flame cutting, and thermal spraying. Because pure acetylene is extremely unstable under pressure, the B20 cylinder is fully filled internally with a porous mass (monolith) and a solvent (usually acetone). In this state, the gas is safely dissolved.
- Flame cutting (Oxy-fuel cutting):
- Application: Cutting through thick plates or beams of unalloyed and low-alloy steel.
- Why the B20? Flame cutting consumes a large amount of gas. The B20 gas cylinder provides sufficient volume per hour without pulling the internal solvent (acetone) out of the cylinder.
- Oxy-fuel welding & Brazing:
- Application: Joining metal pipes and plates (commonly used in installation technology and automotive bodywork) and brazing copper pipes in refrigeration technology.
- Why the B20? The flame is very stable and has a reducing effect, meaning it removes oxygen from the weld pool, thus preventing oxidation (soot formation).
- Heating and straightening (Flame straightening):
- Application: Extremely localized heating of deformed steel beams, chassis, or heavy machine parts to bend them back straight, or heating rusted-on nuts and bolts to loosen them.
- Why the B20? It provides a highly concentrated, intense heat transfer that other gases (like propane) cannot supply quickly enough.
- Thermal spraying (Powder spraying):
- Application: Applying wear-resistant or corrosion-resistant metal layers to machine parts by melting metal powder in the acetylene flame and spraying it onto the surface.

Transport
Transport and rules specific to the B20
- Always transport and secure upright:
- Due to the larger amount of liquid acetone in the cylinder, laying it flat during transport is strictly forbidden.
- Secure the cylinder firmly in the van or trailer with approved tension straps against a fixed wall or in a special cylinder rack. An unsecured 30 kg cylinder can cause enormous damage in the event of an emergency stop.
- Protective cap must be installed:
- Manually screw the steel protective cap onto the cylinder over the valve.
- In the event of a fall, this cap protects the cylinder valve from breaking off. Without a cap, the cylinder can turn into an uncontrolled projectile in a crash.
- Maximize vehicle ventilation:
- Preferably transport the B20 in an open vehicle (pickup, open trailer) or a van with an active ventilation system (roof vent or floor grilles) in the cargo area.
- Transporting in a closed car or van? Leave the windows slightly open and set the vehicle ventilation to the highest setting (do not use recirculation). This prevents a micro-leak from leading to explosive gas accumulation.
- Fire extinguisher on board:
- For professional transport (even under exemption), it is legally mandatory to have an approved and inspected fire extinguisher of at least 2 kg powder (ABC) in the vehicle.
- Strict smoking ban:
- There is an absolute ban on smoking and open flames in, on, and around the vehicle during the loading, transport, and unloading of the gas cylinder.
